What is the Gospel?

What is the Gospel?
Is it “Jesus Loves Me”?
Or “Give God a Try”?
Is it “I prayed a prayer”?
Or “I know where I’m going when I die”?

Can the Gospel be summed in such a short phrase?

He must become greater; I must become less.
